Taking the notion of a “street-level view” quite literally, “Cairo Drive” immerses us in the knotty traffic and issues of Egypt from 2009-2012 (a span that takes us before the uprising and concludes with the most recent presidential elections), capturing the frustrations, humor, and fatalism with which 20 million people take to the streets of Cairo every day. Following vehicles and people from all walks of life in all different shapes and sizes (taxis, buses, motorcycles, donkey carts), we see the hairpin decision-making and near-miraculous timing involved in navigating both sweeping historical changes as well as densely populated city streets.

Details of the sites consist of:

Closed Demolition Landfill/Compost Site | The 10-acre landfill operated for 11-years in the 1980’s and early 1990’s and accepted brush, wood wasted, and miscellaneous construction materials. The landfill has five monitoring wells and one non-potable private well that are sampled.

Clean Fill Site | This 10-acre landfill opened in 1992 and accepts brush, wood wastes, and construction materials. This site also has five monitoring wells that are sampled on an annual basis, of which two are shared with the Closed Demolition Landfill/Compost Site.

Rock County / City of Janesville Sanitary Landfill | This site includes a 45-acre solid waste landfill that operated for about 11-years, closing in 2006. Thirteen monitoring wells are sampled on a semi-annual basis with additional parameters collected annually. Other sampling includes one grab sample from a lift station, quarterly measurements of leachate pumped from the lysimeters, and gas condensate sampling from a drip leg. The project also involves quarterly surface scan monitoring.

New Expansion Sanitary Landfill | This landfill began in 2005 and consists of 38-acres that have been broken into five phases. Three phases are currently constructed and contain a leachate collection system. Landfill gas is also collected in two of the phases. Twelve monitoring wells are sampled on a semi-annual basis with additional parameters collected annually. Leachate samples are collected from three on-site and one off-site manholes on a semi-annual basis. Surface water runoff monitoring is also required from the sedimentation basis. The project also involves quarterly surface scan monitoring.
